Taking the Reins as CTO

Fabindia’s new global CTO Kunal Mehta talks about his key priorities while building the company’s technology roadmap for success

Kunal Mehta, who recently joined Fabindia Overseas as CTO, is in the process of drawing up an ambitious technology roadmap for the brand. While at it, he is cashing in on his extensive experience as a retail-sector technology leader, who has clearly processed the dynamic shifts that the industry has gone through.

“I look forward to working closely with the management at Fabindia and bring in technologies and processes which are world class in retail. A robust IT Strategy plan to implement cutting edge technologies that takes Fabindia ahead of its competitors is being worked upon,” he said while talking to CIODialogues.

Fabindia is a 60+ year old retail brand with 327 stores across 118 cities in India. Over the years, Fabindia has diversified into products ranging from apparel to home furnishing to organic food. Most of its products are sourced directly from artisans in various villages across India.

Mehta is also looking at major technology upgrades at the firm in the next few years, “to ensure improved employee productivity, excellent supply chain, customer experience, better profitability for the business.”

Mehta comes with over 20 years of experience, out of which he spent more than 16 years in the retail and manufacturing sectors in various leadership roles. His previous stints included brands such as Raymond, Trent Hypermarket, Reliance Retail, Johnson & Johnson and Nilkamal.

While at Raymond, Mehta was responsible for successfully transforming Raymond’s IT landscape into a digitally-enabled organization. He also led one of the very first SAP S/4 HANA Retail & Manufacturing platform implementation in the industry for Raymond. He ensured a cloud first approach to set Raymond on the path of digitalization much ahead of its retail and textile industry peers.

Mehta is looking forward to an equally fruitful and transformative journey at Fabindia as the retail sector pins its hope on 2021.

To stay ahead of the race, believes Mehta, organizations will have to review the way they deploy solutions and ensure it is seamless and easily accessible to all. “COVID-19 has changed the ways in which organizations work. Building systems and infrastructure that allows employees to work from anywhere, anytime will be the key,” he sums up.
